The penultimate day of ZFF marked by the Croatian premiere of The Barefoot Emperor and award ceremony
This year’s longest edition of Zagreb Film Festival yet is slowly coming to its end. Saturday starts with the program for the youngest, the popular program of the KinoKino Festival, First Time at the Cinema, at 11 AM, at Tuškanac Cinema, Dubrava Public University and Cultural Center Travno.
At 2 PM at Tuškanac Cinema, the program continues with the regional hit of this year’s edition, the debut film by Serbian actress and director Ivana Mladenović, Ivana the Terrible. The film, which premiered in Locarno, where it won the Special Jury Award in the Cineasti del presente program, follows the Serbian actress living in Romania, but due to a psychological crisis decides to spend the summer in her hometown on the Danube with her family, but things quickly turn into a hilarious chaos.
The program The Great 5 program ends at 5 PM at Tuškanac Cinema with the British film Only You. This intelligent drama (BFI London Film Festival) questions how much can romance withstand the pressure of raw everyday life.
The day will be marked by two screenings (at 7.30 and 10 PM at Tuškanac Cinema) of the new film by famous directorial duo Peter Brosens and Jessica Woodworth, The Barefoot Emperor, completely filmed in Croatia and in Croatian co-production. The sequel of their successful King of the Belgians brings (mis)adventures of the unusual ruler (Peter Van den Begin) in a constant (and unsuccessful) search for self-discovery which in the previous film led him to a truly painful race across the Balkans.
The film will be presented at the Croatian premiere in Tuškanac Cinema by producer, screenwriter and director Jessica Woodworth, actor Titus De Voogdt, Bulgarian co-producer Stefan Kitanov, Croatian co-producers Boris T. Matić and Lana Matić (Propeler Film), costume designer Morana Starčević, composer Alen Sinkauz, composer and actor Nenad Sinkauz, and actors Darko Stazić and Hassan Abdelghani.
Before the screening of The Barefoot Emperor at 7.30 PM at Tuškanac Cinema during the official closing ceremony, this year’s winners and best films of the 17th ZFF will be announced.
Composers Alen and Nenad Sinkauz will also be guests of another Saturday ZFF event within the INDUSTRY program in the Croatian Music Institute at 1 PM, as part of the Who’s Playin’ Over There panel, open to the public. They will talk with leading domestic film composers about original music as an element of dramaturgy. We’ll find out in what way they encapsulate the film’s atmosphere, which methods they use to bring characters closer to us, or how they emphasize a certain mood leading us through the film. Alongside the Sinkauz brothers, the panel will be made up by composers Jura Ferina, Pavle Miholjević, and Hrvoje Štefotić.
Due to popular demand, there will be additional screening at the Museum of Contemporary Art of the film Jojo Rabbit by Taika Waititi at 5 PM.
This year’s last screening at the Dubrava Public University is reserved for the new film by Roy Andersson, About Endlessness, a melancholic-humorous caleidoscope about the banality of existence, life cruelties, but also its beauties.
At 7 PM at the Museum of Contemporary Art, we will screen Monos, the Columbian Oscar contender whose combination of war film and thriller offers a disturbing and hallucinatory vision of the chaos of war from the unique adolescents’ perspective. The program at the Museum of Contemporary Art continues at 9 PM with another Oscar candidate, Beanpole by talented Kantemir Balagov, based on the novel by Nobel laureate Svetlana Alexievich about two young women trying to survive after the war and siege of Leningrad.
It is the last day of the program in KIC Hall. At 7 PM, there is a screening from the My First Film: In Memoriam program, Performance in memory of the recently deceased British director Nicolas Roeg. At 9 PM, program in KIC continues with the program Festivals in the Spotlight with a selection of short films from the International Film Festival in Sofia.
