The main topic of the film is the segmentation of human lives and modern society’s predominant idea of the home – work division. Its protagonist, Roswitha, is a slave in every way: she needs to take care about the household and the children, and then she needs to go to work. Even when she manages to rid herself of one of the slave masters, she realizes it is equally impossible to balance her family and the world. To make a better life for her family, she has to act outside it. In this visionary film, Kluge sets a paradox which hasn’t been adequately resolved to this day.
